Description

Journal of Events in Paris, from June 29, 1815, to July 13, 1815 : By An American Author: An American [Thomas Bolling Robertson] Title: Journal of Events in Paris, from June 29, 1815, to July 13, 1815 : By An American Publication: Philadelphia: M Carey, 1815. Binding: Flexible leather Condition: Very Good- with no dust jacket. Description: Later rebind, some dampstaining, annotations in margins, light tone, otherwise light wear. Solid flexible leather covers. ; Scarce American account of the fall of Napoleon after Waterloo and forced abdication, the maneuvering to create a French solution acceptable to the victorious Allies, the arrival of the Allied forces outside Paris, rumors of a resurrected French army with Napoleon at the head, and the imposition of Louis XVIII as king by the Allies ending the hopes of the Republicans. Virginia-born Robertson at the time was Louisiana's sole Representative to the US Congress, and later would become its third Governor. His sympathies lie with the Republicans, and he is a strong Anglophobe. Marginalia by the prior owner shares that dream of a French Republic or Napoleonic recovery. Altogether an uncommon first person account by an insightful American of the end of the Napoleonic Empire and French republican dreams. ; [v]-viii, [7]-80, [4] ad pages. Book was in great shape—better even than described. Really carefully packed to ensure no damage. Timely shipping. It WAS expensive—very expensive for what it is (but the book was written by my father and I wanted to give it as a gift).
