Description

1883. George Ripley and Charles A. Dana, Editors. George Ripley (1802-1880) was an American social reformer, Unitarian minister, and journalist associated with Transcendentalism. He was the founder of the short-lived Utopian community Brook Farm in West Roxbury, MA. Ripley was a founder of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine". Charles A. Dana was Assist. Secretary of War under Stanton during the Civil War and the owner of the New York "Sun" newspaper after the Civil War. The New American Cyclopaedia, which initially appeared between 1858 and 1863, was a general encyclopedia with a special focus on subjects related to the United States. As it was created over the years spanning the American Civil War, the focus and tone of articles could change drastically; for example, Jefferson Davis, the future president of the Confederate States of America, was treated at length as a United States Army soldier and US government politician. The New American Cyclopaedia was revised and republished as the American Cyclopædia in 1873. Published by D. Appleton and Company, New York and London. Revised 4th edition, published 24 years after the first. Complete in 17 large 4to volumes (includes the elusive Index volume) bound in half brown morocco over marbled boards. Each volume is 10 1/8" x 7 1/4" X 2" thick. Original three-quarter leather and marbled boards with 5 raised bands on spine and stamped in gilt. Marbled paper is a bright red slick paper with blue, white and tan. Marbled endpages. Typically 800-900 pages each volume plus (vii) pages of contents at back. 854 page Index volume. All edges marbled. Illustrated throughout with vignette engravings and two-page color maps. Some general light surface scuffs. A sound, near-fine set in a beautiful binding. No writing, no labels, no ex-library. Appears almost mint after over 100 years old You are unlikely to find a more beautiful set. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
