It is "The Encyclopaedia Britannica," The Third Edition, in Eighteen Volumes, Greatly Improved. Illustrated with 542 copper plate engravings. Published by A. Bell and C. Macfarquhar, Edinburgh, Scotland, 1797. Complete, bound in full leather. This set has an important historical connection. It had been owned by Captain William Pryce Cumby (1771-1837) who was a Royal Navy officer. Capt. Cumby distinguished himself during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, gaining prominence for his actions at the Battle of Trafalgar. During the battle, the French nearly overran his ship, the Bellerophon. Despite heavy bombardment, mounting casualties, and the death of Captain John Cooke, Lieutenant Cumby took command, repelling the boarders and successfully capturing the enemy vessel that had launched the assault. After his military service ended, he was given command of the largest of King George III's royal yachts, HMY Royal Sovereign. He was later promoted to Captain. Captain Cumby's personal name plate appears in all volumes. This set is complete--all volumes present and all illustrations appear. There are condition issues--many of the volumes show gutter and hinge cracks. the front cover has separated from one volume and the covers are partially loose on 6 other volumes. It appears that some of the volumes have been professionally repaired/restored. I will call the set About Good to Good, but the internal text blocks are clean, sound and solid. Volumes measure 9 X 10 3/4. A SCARCE FEW copies of this set have sold for upwards of $3000!! Presently just partial segments of the text are selling for upwards of $325 for just the pages/sections dealing with different subjects--NO COMPLETE SETS WERE FOUND IN ALL OF MY INTERNET SEARCHES.
