With one striking hand-painted plate to the front, alongside a total of twenty-five original photographs, forty-three postcards, and three clippings. Fifteen pages also have charming pencil sketches of birds. This journal was compiled by a Mary Maughan, and details her trips to the Scilly Isles, Wales, England, Kenya, and India. Mary faithfully lists all of the birds sighted on these trips, written in neat hand. One of the trips detailed was to Kenya, led by the noted ornithologist James Ferguson-Lees - one of the photographs shows Ferguson-Lees. The second part of the work focuses on Mary's trip to India, on a 'leisurely tour in the company of experts' a tour from the 10th to 27th February of 1979; brochure for this work is bound in. Two birthday cards loosely inserted, both wishing Mary a happy 21st birthday. CONDITION In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Spine is a little faded. A few light marks to the boards. Spots to the fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
