The thirty sixth volume of an historically renowned scientific journal, one of the oldest scientific journals published in English. This volume covers July through December of 1893 of the fifth series and boasts a variety of articles on contemporary scientific development. Some highlights to this volume are: an article by J.J. Thompson, On the Effect of Electrification and Chemical action on a Steam-Jet, and of Water Vapour and on the Discharge of Electricity through Gases. Sir Joseph John Thomson OM PRS was a British physicist and Nobel Laureate in Physics, credited with the discovery of the electron, the first subatomic particle to be discovered. There are several articles by Lord Kelvin including On the Piezo-electric Property of Quartz. An article by GM Minchin On the Magnetic Field Close To The Surface of a Wire Conveying on Electrical Current. George Minchin Minchin (born George Minchin Smith, 1845–1914) was an Irish mathematician and experimental physicist. He was a pioneer in the development of astronomical photometry: the first-ever celestial photometric measurements were made using photovoltaic cells that he developed for the purpose.
