The brothers wrote their books together and did not spend time apart during their adult lives. They were only parted by the death of Jules in 1870. They are known for their literary work and for their diaries, which offer an intimate view into the French literary society of the later 19th century. The Goncourt brothers' career as writers began with an account of a sketching holiday together. They published books on aspects of 19th century French art and society, dismissing the vulgarity of the Second Empire in favour of a more refined age. They also published six novels of which one was based on the true case of their own maidservant, Rose Malinger, whose lived a double life. On his death, Edmond de Goncourt bequeathed his entire state for the foundation and maintenance of the Academie Goncourt which still awards one of the most important literary prizes in French Literature. Very speedy delivery and extremely well packaged. The book is in wonderful condition for age, better I think than described. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it. As for price, I snatched the offer and am extremely pleased that I did. This seller is a perfect find on eBay and I would purchase from them without hesitation, saved seller, excellent.
