Consisting of volume I: A-E, volume II: F-O, volume III: P-S, and volume IV: T-Z. A fascinating dictionary of plants, designed to be read by gardeners and botanists alike. This work is commonly praised as being the best and most complete work on gardening and garden plants published in the nineteenth century, remaining a standard work on the subject even to this day. The Royal Horticultural Society's current 'Dictionary of Gardening' has Nicholson's 'Illustrated Dictionary' as its basis, even retaining its predecessor's layout. Volume one contains a colour frontispiece, five plates, four of which are in colour, and numerous further in-text illustrations. Volume two contains a colour frontispiece, six colour plates, and numerous further in-text illustrations. Volume three contains a colour frontispiece, five colour plates, and numerous further in-text illustrations. Volume four contains a colour frontispiece, four colour plates, and numerous further in-text illustrations. Collated complete. Edited by George Nicholson, an English botanist and horticulturist, awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society for his contributions to horticulture. CONDITION In the original half crushed morocco with green cloth boards. Externally, with rubbing to the extremities resulting in minor loss to the leather. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. The odd small crease to the foredge. Minor age toning to the endpapers. With editor's letter tipped in to the front endpaper of volume one and the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
