1850's Ledger of C. Hughes Madison College, Uniontown, Pennsylvania and later from Clinton, Dewitt County, Illinois. By C. Hughes Published: Uniontown, Pennsylvania; Clinton, Illinois, 1859 . Approx. 7" x 5" ledger book. Brown leather covers. Spine is perished. Covers very loose and barely attached to the binding. J. C. Hughes name etched on the rear cover. 77 lined blue paper pages. Ledger mostly used with a couple of blank pages. One page is torn in half. Inscription - "C R Hughes Book Madison College Uniontown May 6th, 1855" written on the front paste down. C. Hughes name also written on a few of the early pages. The first pages of ledger consist of notes, work, and an 8 page manuscript section of essays/lectures. 14 pages of listed subjects: Testament, Arithmetic, Reader, Spelling, and Geography with names of students and numbers follows the manuscript section. A list of work dates (no year specified) from Feb. 28th to August 27 is recorded on the next 8 pages. Another 14 pages of hand written lectures and essays (possibly from 1855) are recorded towards the back of the ledger. At some point the ledger and/or owner of the ledger locate to Clinton, Dewitt County, Illinois. A date of 1859 is written on a couple of the entries. The next to last page contains a first name list of boys and girls. The page is inscribed - "Clark Hughes 1855". John C. Hughes Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania name is written on the next to last page in the book. Madison College, Uniontown, Pennsylvania was a Methodist School operating from 1851-1858. "Clark Huges" name is listed in 1855-56 class at Madison College according to a History of Uniontown, Pennsylvania by James Hadden, 1913 Not Ex-Lib. Very rare item published in my home city in 1874. So pleased that this was offered for auction. The book is in better condition that would be expected for something 151 years of age. The book is a nice find with the one problem completely disclosed and described. A good value with the large folding map intact. Well packaged and delivered super-fast. It seems like this seller has a cousin at the post office who can help things along.
