Illustrated with nearly one thousand woodcuts throughout. Sixteen pages of adverts to the front, dated February 1845, and thirty-two pages of adverts to the rear, dated October 1846. An immensely detailed encyclopaedia guiding the reader on the proper running of a Victorian household. Offering a fascinating insight into the Victorian home, written at a time when such manuals were essential for every home and housekeeper. Divided into twenty-six books, with sections including ventilation, artificial illumination, the domestic residence, furniture, servants, food, beverages, bread, food preservation, the arrangement of a kitchen, recipes for English cookery, fabrics for clothing and furniture, the toilette, jewellery, horses, pets, and more. This was an immensely popular publication, being oft-reprinted in both the U.K. and U.S. By Thomas Webster, assisted by the late Mrs. Parkes. CONDITION In a modern quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean, with some light handling marks and scattered spots.
