Prior to this publication, Loudon had chiefly been known as a garden designer, and was respected in the field of landscaping. He was the first to use the term arboretum and was a prolific writer on this subject. He designed many prominent locations, including the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the Abbey Cemetery in Bath and Harewood House. The Oxford Companion to Gardens notes that 'his books, encyclopaedias, and magazines were essential reference books in their day and remain an indispensable source for historians of the period'. This architectural study looks at rural buildings such as the cottage, the villa, country inns, parochial schools, farm houses, offices, gardens and much more. There is not a known collation for Loudon's work, with the lithographic plates usually appearing in the pagination, and printed on both sides. Lithographs present are: IV-V, pp29-30; VI-VII, pp.33-34; VIII-IX, pp.45-46; X-XI, pp.49-50; XII-XIII, pp.55-56; XIV-XV, pp.61-62; XVI-XVII, pp.69-70; XVIII-XIX, pp.75-76; XX-XXI, pp.85-86; XXII-XXIII, pp.89-90; XXIV-XXV, pp.95-96; XXVI-XXVII, pp.99-100; XXVIII-XXIX, pp.103-104; XXX-XXXI, pp.109-110; XXXII-XXXIII, pp.113-114; XXXII-XXXIII, pp.117-118; XXXIII-XXXIV, pp.133-134; XXXVII-XXXVIII, pp.139-140; XLII-XLIII, pp.159-160; XLIV-XLV, pp.165-166; XLVI-XLVII, pp.169-170; XLVIII-XLVIX, pp.173-174; L-LI, pp.177-178; LVII-LVIII, pp.193-194; LXI-LXIV, pp.199-200; LXV-LXVI, pp.203-204; LXVII-LXVIII, pp.209-210; LXIX-LXXII, pp.215-216; LXXIII-LXXVI, pp.225-226. Very speedy delivery and extremely well packaged. The book is in wonderful condition for age, better I think than described. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it. As for price, I snatched the offer and am extremely pleased that I did. This seller is a perfect find on eBay and I would purchase from them without hesitation, saved seller, excellent.
