Spine abraded. Leather discolored from soiling. Ex-library of Marietta Public Library. Blind stamp of Valentin H. Rabe dated 1984 on bottom edge of fly. Folding maps in good working order. Heavier foxing throughout, mild at times. Light toning. Free of known markings. Binding intact. Please see photos. 1st American Edition. Scarce on the market. Jowett begins his book with an overview of the different religious groups in the region, including Jews, Muslims, Ismailis, Ansaris, Druze, Yazidis and many Christian sects. He includes referent to earlier explorers, including Carsten Niebuhr and John Lewis Burckhardt. Jowett traveled from Alexandra to Beirut in May 1823. The final part of the book are given over to fellow-missionary and abolitionist Joseph Greave’s journal account of his visit to Tunis, then under Ottoman rule. COLR1826AFLR
