J. C. Loudon was a Scottish botanist, garden designer and author and was the first to use the term arboretum to refer to a garden of plants, especially trees for scientific purposes. An extensive encyclopaedia of all things gardening, horticulture, floriculture with suggestions for improvement and a general history of gardening in all countries. With many in-text illustrations. With an inscription from Malcolm Higgs dated Edinburgh 1968. From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the ‘Journal of Architecture’. CONDITION In half morocco binding. Externally, very smart with some fading to the spine and rubbing to the spine. With an inscription from Malcolm Higgs dated Edinburgh 1968 to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
