Half-title is present. Illustrated with a folding map. The important travel journal of Mungo Park, recounting Park's final expedition, compiled from a variety of original documents from Park's last mission into Africa. This work is the continuation of Park's earlier publication 'Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa'. Park was one of the first successful European explorers of Africa, the first Westerner recorded to travel to the center of the Niger. His travels inspired further Western exploration of the continent of Africa. He was killed during his second African expedition, after having travelled down two-thirds of the Niger River. This volume includes the journal of Isaaco, an African who was commissioned with trying to search for and find the fate of Park. Collated, bound without 'Addenda to the Account of the Life of Mungo Park' to the rear. Bookplate of Sir Felix Calvert Mackenzie to the front paste down. Mackenzie was a solicitor, knighted on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. CONDITION In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, front board is detached but present. Rubbing to the boards and spine, resulting in some loss of paper and leather. Rear joint is starting, with loss of leather. A small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine, heavier to the tail. Loss to roughly half to the spine label. Minor bumping to the extremities. Rear hinge is reinforced. Bookplate to the front paste down. Blind stamp to the rear endpaper. Lacking the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the occasional spot and ink mark. Small closed tears to the folds of the folding map. Heavy wear to the first few pages, from the half title to page viii, affecting a total of twenty pages; loss to part of the text to the title page, and loss to thirty-two lines of text to the first four pages of the advertisement; loss is significantly heavier to the two page contents, half-title of 'Account of the Life of Mungo Park', and to the first six pages of 'Life', with loss to about half of the pages. Very speedy delivery and extremely well packaged. The book is in wonderful condition for age, better I think than described. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it. As for price, I snatched the offer and am extremely pleased that I did. This seller is a perfect find on eBay and I would purchase from them without hesitation, saved seller, excellent.
