This six volume set features the fictional work 'Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece' written by Jean-Jacques Barthelemy. The work describes the imaginary journeys of a real Scythian named Anacharsis, through the form of a travel journal. This work is considered to be one of the first historical novels. CONDITION Bound in full tree calf. Externally generally smart with fading to the spines, bumping to the extremities, rubbing to the extremities, boards and joints, marks to the boards and small closed tears to the joints to volumes one, two, seven and four. Front hinge starting after front blank to 'Volume Six'. Occasional discolouration to endpapers. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages with occasional spotting and marks, and tidemarks to 'Volume Two'.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
