Following his Holy Orders Lavater was consulted as a casuist. This was due to his genuine depth of conviction. As a casuist Lavater travelled throughout Germany and was widely received. Lavater's writings on mysticism were extremely popular. However, He was best known for his physiognomy works. Lavater had the early belief that physiognomy related to the specific character traits of individuals. These ideas were outlined in his 'Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beforderung der Menschenkenntnis' which was first published between 1775 and 1778. This work was translated by Rev Peter Will, the minister of the reformed German chapel in the Savoy. This is the first English translation of this work. ESTC no. T137189. A fascinating insight into this important figure's mind. CONDITION In full calf bindings. Rebacked, with original boards preserved. Externally, rubbed to the boards, heavier to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Peabody Institute library blind-stamp to the title page. Item number stamped to the verso of title page. Prior owner's copperplate inscription to the margin of page 129 to volume II. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with occasional scattered spots. Heavier to pages 120-121 of volume I.
