Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece to volume I, and two folding maps, printed on three sheets. Collated, complete. Cartwright, a former British army officer, was engaged by a group of British merchants to trade with the native Canadian Esquimaux. Between 1770 and 1786, he made six fishing and trapping expeditions to Labrador, establishing posts near Sandwich Bay. Cartwright's journal provides a detailed account of the fur trade, the native North American population, and observations on the natural history and meteorology of Labrador, along with a glossary of English language words particular to Canadian life at the time. The ordinary paper issue, ESTC reference no. T133714 Written in an unadorned style, Cartwright informs his readers: ''Tho I have often slept whole nights on mountains as high as that of famed Parnassus, yet, never having taken a nap on its sacred summit, it cannot be expected, that I should have awoke a Poet'. CONDITION Rebound in full calf, with endpapers renewed. Externally, excellent, with minor rubbing to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with scattered light spotting throughout each volume, and more significant spotting to the rear of volume I. The odd light pencil marginal notation. A+ Top Ebayer. The Book is an amazing piece of history. It is def authentic. Grades are a little generous in the listing at Near fine and good for a book that is 115 years old.
