Four issues of 'Journal des Scavans' bound in one, being May, June, July, and August 1736, with a continuous pagination. 'Journal des Scavans' is the earliest academic journal published in Europe, containing a myriad of articles on European history and premodern literature. May, June, and July each contain nine articles, and August contains eight articles. Articles include 'Essais de Medecine & d'Observations Publiees par une Societe a Edimboug', 'Memoires de Hambourg', and 'Nouvelles Litteraires'. Bookplate of Charles Bruce, the third Earl of Ailesbury to the front paste down, a Tory politician who sat in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. CONDITION In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with some light rubbing and marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Small chip to the head of the spine. Small repair to the rear board. Bookplate and ink note to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
