The original French and English edition were critical in giving rise to more other dictionaries, such as Pierre Bayle’s “ Critical Dictionary ”. While this work was highly influential during its time , it was eventually replaced as the preeminent reference work when Diderot’s ‘ Encyclopedia’ was printed.
